What these symbols are, and why your keyboard cannot type them

A keyboard gives you about a hundred characters. Unicode, the standard every modern device agrees on, defines well over a hundred thousand, and the 643 on this page are the ones people actually paste into a bio, a caption, a spreadsheet or a game name. They are text, not pictures: ★ ♥ → ✓ ± € • are characters in exactly the same sense as the letter A. They take the color of the surrounding text, they scale with the font size, they survive a copy and paste, and a search engine or a screen reader can still read the words around them.

That is the whole reason a symbol beats an image or an emoji for decoration. An image breaks the line height and cannot be typed into a username field. An emoji is drawn by each platform, so the star you chose on an iPhone is a different picture on Android. A text star is one shape, one color, everywhere the font covers it.

Which symbol for which job

• Ratings and emphasis: ★ ☆ for filled and empty stars, ✦ ✧ ⭑ when you want something smaller and quieter.
• Yes and no, done and not done: ✓ ✔ ☑ against ✗ ✘ ☒. Use ✓ and ✗ in running text and the boxed pair in a checklist.
• Pointing at something: → ← ↑ ↓ inside a sentence, ➤ ➜ ➔ at the start of a line, ⇒ ⇔ for a consequence or a two-way relationship.
• Lists and dividers: • ‧ ▪ ⁃ as bullets, and · between short items on one line.
• Numbers and units: ± × ÷ ≈ ≠ ≤ ≥ ∞ √ ° ‰ for anything measured, and $ € £ ¥ ₩ ₹ ₿ for money.
• Warmth and decoration: ♥ ♡ ❤ ❥ ღ for hearts, ✿ ❀ ❁ for flowers, ☀ ☁ ❄ ☾ for weather and sky.
• Quoting and typography: « » ‹ › for angle quotes, — and – for the long and short dash, § ¶ † ‡ for reference marks.

How to put a symbol in an Instagram or TikTok display name

1. Pick the symbol here and tap it. Use the search box if you know the name: white star, rightwards arrow, check mark.
2. Open the app, go to edit profile, and put the cursor in the Name field, not the username field. The username that starts with @ accepts only letters, numbers, periods and underscores.
3. Press and hold in the field, tap Paste, and save.
4. If the app refuses to save, the symbol is outside what that field allows. Try a plainer one from the Popular group; ★ ♥ → ✓ pass almost everywhere.

How to stop ✔ from turning into a colored emoji

Some characters have two faces. ✔ ❤ ☀ ⚠ ♠ and others can be drawn as flat text or as a color emoji, and which one you get is decided by an invisible character that travels with them. U+FE0F asks for the emoji form, U+FE0E asks for the text form. Several keyboards and apps, Apple’s among them, attach U+FE0F for you, which is why a check mark that looked black on the page arrives as a colored badge in a message.

Two things help. First, prefer a character that has no emoji form at all: ✓ instead of ✔, ★ instead of ⭐, ♥ instead of ❤. Those never switch. Second, if you need the exact character, append U+FE0E after it to request the text form. Many desktop browsers and editors honor it; a fair number of mobile apps strip or ignore it, so paste it into the real field and look before you publish.

How to copy and paste on a phone or a computer

• iPhone and iPad: tap the symbol, then press and hold inside the target field and tap Paste. This works in Safari and in the in-app browsers of Instagram and other apps.
• Android: tap the symbol, then long press in the field and choose Paste. Some keyboards offer a clipboard icon on the suggestion bar instead.
• Windows and Mac: click the symbol, then Ctrl+V or Cmd+V. If a field refuses the paste, type any letter first, paste next to it, then delete the letter.
• Without this page: Win and the period key opens the Windows emoji and symbol panel; Ctrl+Cmd+Space opens Emoji & Symbols on a Mac, where you can search by name.

Where symbols work and where they get stripped

• Instagram and TikTok: display name, bio and captions accept symbols. The @username does not; both platforms limit it to letters, numbers, periods and underscores.
• X: the display name accepts symbols, the @handle is letters, numbers and underscores only.
• Discord: the new-style username is lowercase letters, digits, periods and underscores. The display name and per-server nicknames take symbols.
• WhatsApp, Telegram, Messenger: profile names and messages take symbols. A Telegram public @username is restricted the same way a handle is.
• Word, Google Docs, Notion, Slack, email bodies: all fine, they are just text.
• Games: name rules differ per title and change with updates. Many allow a small set of symbols and reject the rest outright, so test before you spend a rename.
• Email addresses, file names, passwords, code: avoid. Those places want plain ASCII and will either reject the value or store something you cannot retype.

Things to watch out for

A symbol your device draws beautifully may arrive as an empty box on someone else’s. That box means the reader’s font has no glyph for the character, not that the text is broken. Arrows, stars, hearts, check marks and the main currency signs are covered almost everywhere; chess pieces, musical staff symbols and the rarer currency signs are the ones that fall back. Send the text to yourself on a second device if it matters.

Two more. Accessibility: a screen reader announces many symbols by name, so a display name padded with a dozen stars turns into a long announcement for anyone listening. Keep decoration light. Spreadsheets: a cell holding a symbol is text, so it drops out of a sum or an average. Put the symbol in a label column, not in the numbers.
