Why a game refuses a decorated name
Nickname symbols are not a font and not an image. They are ordinary Unicode characters sitting next to the letters of your name: ornate brackets borrowed from the Javanese and Tibetan blocks, stars and hearts from the symbol blocks, and tiny raised letters from the phonetic extensions. That is why a fancy name survives copy and paste.
It is also why so many of them get rejected. Every game validates a name against its own allow list, and anything outside that list is refused however it was typed, so a string that works in one game can fail in the next one you open. Display names are the friendlier target: Discord, Steam, Instagram and TikTok all accept brackets and stars in the name other people see, while the underlying handle or username almost never does. Build it, test it, then pay for it
The composer lets you type your name, preview every frame with your own text inside it, add single symbols before or after, and copy the finished string once. Two things decide whether it survives.
- Length is measured differently by different games. Many count a full width character as two, so an ornate frame can eat half of a twelve character allowance before you type a letter.
- Font coveragevaries by device. A rare character that renders on your phone can arrive as an empty box on a teammate's older handset. The commoner the symbol, the wider the support.
Because most games charge for a rename, test the finished string somewhere free first. A Discord display name costs nothing and can be changed again a minute later, which makes it the cheapest way to find out whether you actually like the style once it is sitting in a member list.

The English edition of this category currently has one tool. All of them use official localised names only and fall back to the English name when no official one exists, rather than inventing a translation, so the Chinese pages are still usable with English search terms. Which games and apps actually accept symbols in a name?
Display names are the friendliest place: Discord display names and server nicknames, Steam profile names, and the display name on Instagram and TikTok all take brackets, stars and hearts. Among games, mobile shooters are the traditional home of the decorated nickname. Why do my symbols show up as empty boxes for other people?
A box means the font on that device has no glyph for that code point. The character is still there and still correct, it simply cannot be drawn. Game clients ship their own fonts and usually cover far less of Unicode than a phone does, so the rarer the character, the more likely someone sees a box.
Does a symbol count as one character or two?
It depends on how the game measures length. Some count Unicode code points, some count UTF-16 units, and many games written for Asian markets count a full width character as two. Will my friends still be able to find me in player search?
Often not. Most in-game player search needs an exact string, and a friend who cannot type an ornate bracket cannot search for you. Send them the finished nickname to paste, or use the friend code, invite link or QR code the game provides. If people usually add you by searching, keep the decoration light.
Are the MapleStory, Zelda and Pokemon tools available in English?
Not yet. Those nine tools are currently Traditional Chinese only, because their data is built around the official Chinese names used on the Taiwanese servers.
