What the Hyrule Compendium is, and what this page adds

In The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, the Hyrule Compendium is the catalogue that fills itself in as you photograph things with the Sheikah Slate. It is genuinely useful once it is full, with one catch: an entry stays blank until you have taken the picture, and the book only answers the question you can already ask. You look up a monster you have met and read its page. This tool starts complete instead. All 389 entries are here from the first second, sorted into the same five categories the game uses.

The lookup the in-game book cannot do

The question players actually have is usually the other way around. Not “what does a Lynel drop” but “which monsters drop amber, because I need three more for a quest”, or “what am I going to run into if I cross Hyrule Field”. The search box here matches names, compendium descriptions, common locations and drops all at once, so both directions are a single query. Type amber and you get the twelve entries that drop it. Type Hyrule Field and you get everything the compendium records as living there.

Where the data comes from

Entries, descriptions, locations, drops and artwork come from the Hyrule Compendium API, a community maintained open source project. This page ships a static snapshot of that data, so a search runs in your browser rather than over the network.

What each of the five categories holds

  • Monsters (81): chuchus, keese, octoroks and wizzrobes through bokoblins, moblins and lizalfos up to Hinox, Stone Taluses, Lynels, the Yiga Clan and Calamity Ganon, with every colour and elemental variant listed separately.
  • Equipment (185): the largest category by far. The Master Sword and the Hylian Shield, the royal, guardian and ancient weapon lines, Lynel weapons, bows, elemental arrows and every shield.
  • Materials (36): what you cook with. Apples, wildberries, hearty durians, hydromelons, spicy peppers, voltfruit, mushrooms and herbs.
  • Creatures (83): horses including the Giant Horse and the White Horse, the Lord of the Mountain, sand seals, boars, goats, foxes, birds, fish and insects.
  • Treasure (4): treasure chests plus the three kinds of ore deposit.

Open Materials when you are planning a recipe, Treasure when you are running an ore route, Monsters when you are farming parts for armour upgrades, and Equipment when you want to know what an item you just picked up actually is. When you cannot tell which category something belongs to, do not guess: the search box ignores categories and matches all five at once.

Four ways to reach an entry quickly

  • You know the name: type it. The list filters as you type, so there is no Enter key and no submit button. Partial words work, and case does not matter.
  • You know where you are: type the region or landmark, such as Lanayru Great Spring, Gerudo Desert or Eldin Canyon, to see what the compendium records there.
  • You know the material: type the drop, such as bokoblin horn or lynel hoof, and you get every entry that yields it.
  • You are just browsing: use the category tabs. Each tab lists its entries in compendium ID order, the same order the game uses, which is handy when you are filling gaps in your own book.

Worked example: what a monster drops and where it lives

  1. Type the monster name in the search box. Typing lynel brings back the whole family, from the plain Lynel to the silver and golden ones, because they are separate compendium entries with different drops.
  2. Click a card. The panel shows the artwork, the compendium description, the common locations and the drops. A Lynel lists lynel horn, lynel hoof and lynel guts, and is recorded in Lanayru Great Spring and Hyrule Field.
  3. Read the locations as a starting point rather than a map. They are the places the compendium records, not the only places the monster turns up.
  4. To flip the question around, put the drop into the same box. Typing lynel horn tells you which members of the family give you one, which matters when a great fairy wants a specific part.
  5. Press Esc or click outside the panel to close it, and clear the search box to go back to category browsing. A search shows at most 60 cards, and the line under the box tells you when there are more.

Taking a result with you

There is no copy button here, because what you usually want to keep is not a string of text but the lookup you just did. A link does that job better.

  • Share one search as a link: add ?q= and your keyword to the address, as in /en/tools/zelda-botw?q=lynel. Opening that link drops the keyword straight into the search box. Every name in the index at the bottom of this page is already a link of exactly that shape.
  • Search the whole page at once: that index prints all 389 entry names into the HTML, so Ctrl+F on Windows, Cmd+F on a Mac, or Find in page from your mobile browser menu will find anything on this page without the search box.
  • Send it to a friend: with the detail panel open, a screenshot is the fastest route. Power and volume up on an iPhone, power and volume down on most Android phones, Win+Shift+S on Windows, Cmd+Shift+4 on a Mac.
  • Paste a name somewhere else: select the text and copy it. The names here follow the game’s own English text, so they match what a wiki, a guide or another player will recognise.

How this differs from the in-game book, and from Tears of the Kingdom

Looking for Tears of the Kingdom?

That sequel has its owncompendium pagewith its own 509 entries, covering the sky islands, the Depths and the Zonai machinery. The two are kept apart on purpose: a search for bokoblin should return the Breath of the Wild entry when you are playing Breath of the Wild, not two near identical cards from different games.

Against the compendium in the game

  • The in-game compendium only shows what you have photographed. This page is complete from the start, which is the point if you are checking something you have not met yet.
  • The language of the in-game book follows your console settings. This page does not read your console: entry names here are the English ones, which is what most guides and wikis use.
  • The game tracks personal progress, such as how many of an item you are carrying and which pictures you still owe. There is no account here and nothing is tracked, so everyone sees the same 389 entries.
  • Breath of the Wild shipped on Nintendo Switch and Wii U. The compendium content is the same on both, so nothing on this page is specific to one of them.

Limits worth knowing before you rely on this

Why the search is instant

All 389 entries are bundled into the page at build time, so typing filters an array already in memory rather than calling an API. That is why there is no spinner and no lag. Artwork is the exception: each image is fetched from the Hyrule Compendium API host as its card scrolls into view.

  • The data is a snapshot: it is fixed when the page is built and does not follow game updates in real time. Where this page and your game disagree, the game is right.
  • No stats: the snapshot carries names, descriptions, categories, locations and drops. Equipment entries do not include attack power, durability or defence values.
  • This is not a walkthrough: it answers what something is, where it is found and what it drops. It has no combat tactics, no tier lists and no route planning.
  • Images come from elsewhere: if that host is slow or unreachable, artwork will not appear. Text search keeps working, because none of it depends on the network.
  • Keyboard and screen readers: the search box, the category tabs and every card are reachable with Tab and open with Enter, and the detail panel closes with Esc.

Frequently asked questions

Which Zelda game does this compendium cover?

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, released in 2017 for Nintendo Switch and Wii U. All 389 entries are here, split into the same five categories the Hyrule Compendium uses in game: monsters, equipment, materials, creatures and treasure.

Where does the data come from?

Entry names, descriptions, common locations, drops and artwork come from the Hyrule Compendium API, a community maintained open source project. This page uses a static snapshot taken at build time, so searching never calls the API. The artwork itself is still loaded from that API host when a card scrolls into view.

How do I find out what a monster drops?

Type the monster name in the search box and open its card. The panel lists the entry artwork, the compendium description, the common locations and every drop the compendium records. A Lynel, for example, shows lynel horn, lynel hoof and lynel guts.

How do I find every monster that drops a particular material?

Put the material name in the same search box. Search matches the drops field as well as names, so typing amber lists every entry that drops amber rather than looking for an entry called amber. That is the reverse lookup the in game compendium cannot do.

Can I search by location?

Yes. Type a region or landmark such as Hyrule Field, Lanayru Great Spring or Gerudo Desert and you get every entry the compendium lists as commonly found there. Hyrule Field alone is attached to well over a hundred entries, so add a second word when the list gets long.

Is Tears of the Kingdom included?

No. Tears of the Kingdom has its own page with its own 509 entries, including the sky islands, the Depths and the Zonai devices. Keeping them apart means a search for bokoblin returns the Breath of the Wild entry rather than two versions of the same monster.

Why does the count say more results than I can see?

A search shows at most 60 cards so the page does not have to load hundreds of images at once, but the line under the box reports the true number of matches. When the two numbers differ, type a few more letters and the list narrows to what you actually wanted.

Are the common locations the only places an entry appears?

No. Common locations are the places the compendium records for that entry, not an exhaustive map. Wildlife and monsters wander, weather and blood moons move things around, and plenty of entries turn up outside the region listed here.

Does this page show weapon attack power or shield defence?

No. The snapshot behind this page carries names, descriptions, categories, locations and drops, so equipment entries show what an item is and where it is found but not its damage or durability numbers. Check the item in game for those.

Is this an official Nintendo page?

No. This is an independent tool with no affiliation with or endorsement from Nintendo. The Legend of Zelda and all entry names, descriptions and artwork belong to their respective owners and are reproduced here only so you can look an entry up.
