What the Hyrule Compendium is, and why the in-game one stalls

In The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, the Hyrule Compendium is the research tool Purah hands you: a catalogue of every monster, weapon, creature, material and piece of treasure in the game. It has one rule that makes it useless for planning. An entry stays blank until you photograph the thing yourself. You cannot look up where a Silver Lynel hangs around, because the only way to fill in the Silver Lynel page is to walk up to one first.

This page is the same catalogue with that rule removed. All 509 entries are readable from the first second: name, description, common locations, drops and picture, across the five categories the game uses. Searching runs on the whole set at once, so you can start from a monster you are about to fight, a material you are short of, or a region you are about to cross.

Where the entries come from

The names, descriptions, locations, drops and artwork are taken from the Hyrule Compendium API, an open source project that players have maintained since Breath of the Wild. This page uses a snapshot of it, packaged when the site was built, so nothing is fetched while you search. The spellings are the official English ones, which is what you want when you are typing a name you half remember from the screen.

Which category holds what

  • Monsters: 110 entries. Bokoblins, Moblins, Lizalfos, Lynels and Hinoxes, the additions this game made its own such as Horriblins, Froxes, Gibdos and Gleeoks, plus the Construct line from Soldier Construct I through the Captain Constructs and the Flux Constructs, and every colour and elemental variant of all of them.
  • Equipment: 175 entries, covering one-handed weapons, two-handers, spears, bows and shields. The Master Sword and the Hylian Shield are here, so are the Zonaite line with its strong and mighty tiers, the Gerudo scimitars and the Eightfold blades, and the decayed and pristine versions of the Royal and Knight families as separate cards.
  • Materials: 126 entries. Cooking ingredients such as Hyrule Herb, Spicy Pepper and the whole shroom family from Hylian Shroom to Razorshroom, sky-only plants such as Sundelion and Skyshroom, underground finds such as Brightbloom Seed and Muddle Bud, and the horns, claws, fangs and gemstones you actually fuse to weapons.
  • Creatures: 92 entries. Horses including the giant and white ones, Blupees, Dondons, sand seals, and the insects, frogs, birds and fish you catch for elixirs.
  • Treasure: 6 entries, which is the small set of ore deposits, Zonaite deposits, wells and chests.

Pick Monsters when you are preparing for a fight, Equipment when you want a base weapon to fuse onto, and Materials or Treasure when you are short of something for a recipe or a fuse. If you cannot tell which one an item belongs to, do not guess: the search box ignores categories and matches all five at once.

The four ways to search

  • By name: type any part of it. Horriblin returns the base monster and its blue, black and silver variants together, which is usually what you wanted anyway.
  • By location: the search reads the common locations of every entry, so Gerudo Desert, Hyrule Field or Thunderhead Isles lists what you are likely to run into there. Typing Depths catches The Depths along with the regional slices such as Central Hyrule Depths.
  • By drop: searching amber, zonaite or lynel saber horn lists every creature that drops it. This is the direction you usually need, because you know the material you are missing rather than the monster that carries it.
  • By browsing: leave the box empty and use the five category tabs. Each tab lists its entries in compendium ID order, the same order the game uses.

Descriptions are searched too, which is the escape hatch for the entry whose name you cannot recall. If you only remember that the thing glows in the dark, search glow and read down the results.

Working backwards from a fuse material to a monster

  1. Decide which half you are looking for. A fused weapon is never a compendium entry, so search for the base weapon or for the material, never for the combination.
  2. Type the material name. Because the search covers the drops field, a part name such as horn, claw or fang returns the monsters that drop it rather than an empty result.
  3. Open a result card. The Common locations row is your farming route, and the picture confirms you have the right variant, which matters when four colours of the same monster drop four different horns.
  4. For the other half, switch to the Equipment tab or search the weapon by name. Remember that the upgraded Zonaite tiers and the decayed versus pristine versions are separate entries, so compare the cards before you commit.
  5. Press Escape or click outside the panel to close it. Clearing the search box takes you back to the category tabs. A search shows at most 60 cards, and the count above them tells you whether there are more.

Taking an entry with you

There is no copy button, because what you want to keep is rarely a line of text. It is the search you just ran. A link does that job better.

  • Share a search: add ?q= and a keyword to the address, for example /en/tools/zelda-totk?q=lynel, and the page opens with that search already run. Every name in the entry index on this page is a link of exactly that shape.
  • Find on page: the index prints all 509 names into the page itself, so Ctrl+F on Windows, Cmd+F on a Mac, or Find in page from your mobile browser menu will find any of them without a search.
  • Send a card to a friend: a screenshot with the detail panel open is fastest. Power and volume up on an iPhone, power and volume down on most Android phones, Win+Shift+S on Windows, Cmd+Shift+4 on a Mac.
  • Paste a name somewhere else: select it on screen and copy. The names here are the official English ones, so they match what a wiki, a guide or a friend on Discord will recognise.

How this differs from the game, and from Breath of the Wild

Looking for Breath of the Wild?

The two games share a Hyrule but not a compendium. The entry numbering, the enemy roster and the weapon system are all different, and nothing from one is mixed into the other here. For the older game, use the separate Breath of the Wild compendium on this site.

Against the compendium in your pocket

  • The in-game compendium only shows what you have photographed. This one shows all 509 entries from the start, which is the whole point of looking something up before you go.
  • The in-game compendium follows your console language setting. This page is served in English at this address and in Traditional Chinese at the Chinese one, so the language is a choice of URL rather than a system setting.
  • The in-game compendium tracks how many of each material you hold and which pictures you have taken. This page has no account and stores no progress, so every visitor sees the same thing.
  • The game gets patched. This page ships a snapshot, so when the two disagree, believe the game.

Before you rely on it

  • It is a snapshot: the text was packaged when the site was built and does not follow game updates by itself.
  • Fused weapons are not in it: the combinations run into the tens of thousands and none of them is a compendium entry. Only the base weapons and the fuse materials are here.
  • It is not a strategy guide: names, locations and drops only. No damage numbers, no durability, no boss routes, because those move with patches and with your own gear.
  • Locations are typical, not exhaustive: the common locations field lists where something usually turns up, and some entries have no location at all. An empty row means the data has none, not that the item is unobtainable.
  • Pictures come from elsewhere: entry artwork is loaded from the Hyrule Compendium API host, so a card can sit on its placeholder if that host is slow or blocked. The text still works.
  • Keyboard and screen readers: the search box, the category tabs and the entry cards are all reachable with Tab and open with Enter, and the detail panel closes with Escape.

This is an independent tool site with no connection to Nintendo and no official licence of any kind. The Legend of Zelda and Tears of the Kingdom, along with the entry names, description text and artwork shown here, belong to their respective rights holders and appear only so that you can look them up.

Frequently asked questions

Which Zelda game does this compendium cover?

It covers The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom on Nintendo Switch, with all 509 entries of the in-game Hyrule Compendium: monsters, equipment, materials, creatures and treasure. The categories and the entry names follow the game. Breath of the Wild numbers its entries differently and has a different enemy roster, so it lives on a separate page of this site.

Do fused weapons show up in the compendium?

No, and they never will. Fuse produces tens of thousands of combinations and none of them is a fixed compendium entry, in the game or here. What you can look up are the two halves you start from: base weapons such as the Knight’s Broadsword, the Royal Claymore and the Zonaite Longsword, and fuse materials such as horns, claws, fangs and bones. Look up both, then decide what to stick together.

Why do some weapons appear twice, once with (new) after the name?

That is how the compendium itself separates the decayed weapon you pick up around Hyrule from the pristine version of the same weapon. Both are real entries with their own pictures, so a search for royal claymore returns two cards. Treat the (new) card as the intact weapon and the plain one as the corroded pickup.

Are Zonai gear and Constructs included?

Yes. The Zonaite weapon line is here in full, including the strong and mighty tiers of the sword, longsword, spear, bow and shield. The Construct enemies are in the monsters category: Soldier Construct I to IV, Captain Construct I to IV, the Flux Constructs and the Training Construct. The Zonai devices you attach to vehicles, such as fans and flame emitters, are gameplay items rather than compendium entries, so they are out of scope.

How do I find out which monster drops a material?

Type the material name into the search box. Every search reads the drops field as well as the name, so searching amber, lynel hoof or horriblin horn lists each creature that drops it. Open a card and the Common locations row tells you where that creature is usually found, which is where you go to farm it.

How do I find items that only exist in the Depths or the sky?

Search by region instead of by item. Typing Depths matches The Depths together with the regional slices such as Central Hyrule Depths and Gerudo Desert Depths. Typing Great Sky Island or Lanayru Sky Archipelago does the same for the islands. If you already know the item, search it directly: Brightbloom Seed for the Depths, Sundelion or Skyshroom for the sky.

Why does a search stop at 60 results?

Sixty cards is the cap, because each card loads its own picture and a broad word like horn would otherwise pull in hundreds of images on a phone connection. The line above the results always states the real total, so you can see when you are being shown a slice. Add a few more letters to narrow it, or clear the box to browse the five categories in full.

Where does the data come from?

Entry names, description text, common locations, drops and the pictures all come from the Hyrule Compendium API, an open source project maintained by players. This page ships a static snapshot taken when the site was built rather than calling the API on every visit. That keeps searching instant, but it also means the text does not change the moment a game update lands. Where they disagree, the game is right.

Do I have to photograph entries the way the game makes me?

No. In the game an entry stays blank until you take its picture, which is exactly why the in-game compendium is useless for planning a trip. Here all 509 entries are readable from the first second. The trade-off is that there is no account and no progress tracking, so this page cannot tell you which entries you personally still have to snap.

Does it show attack power, hearts or weak points?

No. This is a lookup for names, locations and drops, and the description on each card is the flavour text from the compendium itself. Damage numbers, durability values and boss strategies are deliberately left out: they shift with game updates and with your own armour and fuse choices, so a static table would mislead more often than it would help.

Sources

  • Entries, descriptions, common locations, drops and artwork come from the Hyrule Compendium API, a community project. This page uses a static snapshot of it.
  • Entry names are the official English ones as they appear in the game and on Nintendo’s own product pages for the title.
  • Where the game and this page disagree on a name, a count or a location, the game and Nintendo’s own announcements are correct.
